Pump Distributors Help Ellis Island Rebuild After Sandy

BJM shredder pumps were just one way that Ellis Island, located in New York, was able to start the process of rebuilding this year.

On Oct. 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy affected the lives of many people along the East Coast. Some places have rebuilt and reopened, some places are in the process and others have yet to even start. Every little bit of aid has helped thousands rebuild their homes, businesses and historic sites throughout the last six months.

Pump Express, a pump distributor and national service center for the world's leading manufacturers of industrial pumps and pump parts, provided help when it came to rebuilding Ellis Island. Closed since last November, Ellis Island has yet to set a reopening date. Part of the issue that the island had was with the sewage ejector system, which helps eliminate clogging.

Before the system was replaced with BJM shredder pumps, it operated on a two-pump system. This meant that if one of the pumps was to ever malfunction, the second pump would kick into gear and start working. The problem during Sandy was that both pumps ran out and left Ellis Island without a sewage ejector system.

BJM shredders are a solution to the older pumps that had been on Ellis Island for 30 years. Shredder pumps have a cutting impeller that quickly cuts up solids. The pumps can also better handle sandy water and rough conditions because of the strong impeller blade. A seal above the impeller prevents debris from entering the seal chamber as well. It was because of the durability and success of the shredder pumps as a product that our experts at Pump Express installed a pair of 15 hp BJM shredders on Ellis Island. We also replaced steel piping, installed a new rail system and resurfaced the base of the sewage pit.

At Pump Express, we offer innovative solutions to our customers at affordable prices. By replacing the system on Ellis Island, we were able to help in the rebuilding process of a historic site that thousands of people visit every year.
